God’s native language is silence, the church fathers say. Silence is God’s voice, and that voice says, “I love you, I love you, I love you.” For silence is the space that God has made within his Being for us to be. This is love: to let the other be, to open a space within self for other. Silence is that space within God’s being where we are able to be. So, when we hear silence, we are listening to God tell us that he loves us enough to make room within himself for us.

Making wonders from weaknesses

Morning by morning, day by day, Ghele went to the river, to fill his two pots and walked to the town to distribute the water to his clients. Ghele was a waterseller.

“It could not take long, until Ghele discards me”, said the one pot sad. Because he was cracked and leaking water permanently. The other pot was new and earned more money.

One morning the poor damaged pot felt very inferior and decided to speak to Ghele: “When we arrive in town, I am half-empty. You are losing money because of me. Please forgive me.”

“Look at the path by the side of the road”, Ghele replied. Carefully the cracked pot sneaked a peek. “Oh, it’s beautiful. Many small flowers”, he said in awe.

“That is all thanks to you!” The cracked pot looked blank until Ghele went on: “I bought flower seeds and sowed them along the way. And, without realizing it, you’ve been watering them every day. Never forget that we are all a little damaged. But if we ask him for it, God can do wonders with our limitations.”

Fader i Himlene! Hvad er dog et Menneske uden Dig!
Hvor er Alt hvad han veed, var det end det Mangfoldiges Mængde, kun et afbrudt Stykke, hvis han ikke kjender Dig;
er al hans Stræben, var den end omfattende en Verden, kun et halvgjort Arbeide, hvis han ikke kjender Dig, Du den Ene, som er Eet og som er Alt!
Saa give Du i Forstanden Viisdom til at fatte det Ene, i Hjertet Oprigtighed til at annamme Forstaaelsen, i Villien Reenhed ved kun at ville Eet;
saa give Du i gode Dage Vedholdenhed til at ville Eet, i Adspredelser Samling til at ville Eet, i Lidelser Taalmod til at ville Eet.
O, Du som giver baade at begynde og at fuldkomme, Du give aarle, naar Dagen gryer, den Unge Beslutningen at ville Eet;
naar Dagen helder give Du Oldingen en fornyet Ihukommelse af sin første Beslutning, at det Sidste maatte være som det Første, det Første som det Sidste, være Dens Liv, der kun har villet Eet.

Father in heaven, what is man without you!
What is all that he knows, vast accumulation though it be, but a chipped fragment if he does not know you!
What is all his striving, could it even encompass a world, but a half-finished work if he does not know you: you the One, who is one thing and who is all!
So may you give to the intellect, wisdom to comprehend that one thing; to the heart, sincerity to receive this understanding; to the will, purity that wills only one thing.
In prosperity may you grant perseverance to will one thing; amid distractions, collectedness to will one thing; in suffering, patience to will one thing.
O you who give both the beginning and the completion, may you early, at the dawn of day, give to the young person the resolution to will one thing.
As the day wanes, may you give to the old person a renewed remembrance of their first resolution, that the first may be like the last, the last like the first, in possession of a life that has willed only one thing.

If you renounce the powerful motor of profit-striving you have to put another power in its place: service in the religious sense. That is solid ground and brings blessings which we feel thankfully every day. Living and believing in the midst of all the indifference – that is the great experience.

We are the objects of undying love on the part of God. We know: he has always his eyes open on us, even when it seems to be dark. He is our father; even more he is our mother. He does not want to hurt us, He wants only to do good to us, to all of us.

Parable of the rich peasant

And he told them this parable: The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich towards God.

Faithraising instead of fundraising

Saddleback doesn’t do fundraising. For us, it’s all about faithraising. Why? Because we believe GOD is primarily interested in growing our faith, not getting our money. We also believe that if the first happens, the second will naturally occur.

Give God the credit

A lot of people are willing to give God the credit, but not too many are willing to give him the cash.

You hear a lot of strange things about tithing. Some say it is a church tax, and they expect me to pay it and that is the end of it. Others say that when I give God one-tenth of my income, He blesses the nine-tenths that is left to the extent that the nine-tenths now goes as far as the whole thing used to go.

This isn’t really true, is it? Suppose a farmer had 100 bushels of corn in the barn and he decides to plant 10 bushels in the ground. What multiplies? Is it the 90 bushels that he has left in the barn? Oh, no. All of us “farmers” know it is the 10 bushels you put in the ground that multiplies.

Similarly, it is the 10 percent you give to God that multiplies..

One Solitary Life

He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in still another village, where he worked in a carpenter shop until he was thirty. Then for three years he was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He didn’t go to college. He never visited a big city. He never travelled two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He did none of the things one usually associates with greatness. He had no credentials but himself.

He was only thirty-three when the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. He was turned over to the enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed on a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead, he was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.

Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure of the human race and the leader of mankind’s progress. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that One Solitary Life.

The Ten Commandments (Version by Martin Luther)

1. I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
2. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour’s.
